What Is Oral Pathology?
Oral pathology is a specialized area of dentistry focused on diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the mouth, jaw, and surrounding structures. This includes identifying abnormalities such as lesions, cysts, tumors, and infections that may develop in the soft tissues or bones. At Mobile Oral and Facial Surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgeons Dr. Christopher Mullenix and Dr. Aaron Wallender use advanced diagnostic techniques, including biopsies, to evaluate suspicious areas and ensure timely, accurate treatment. Their expertise in oral pathology plays a critical role in detecting serious conditions early and providing patients with the best possible outcomes. To learn more, contact our Mobile, AL office.
How Does Oral Pathology Work?
Oral pathology works by carefully examining the mouth for signs of disease, often beginning with a visual inspection and an oral cancer screening to detect unusual lesions, lumps, or discolorations. During an oral pathology appointment, one of our oral surgeons may recommend a biopsy if an abnormal area is found. This involves removing a small sample of tissue for laboratory analysis to determine if it is benign, precancerous, or malignant. The biopsy procedure is typically quick, often completed in under 30 minutes, and is usually performed under local anesthesia to numb the area. These appointments are essential for early detection and accurate diagnosis, leading to timely and effective treatment.
What Are the Benefits of Oral Pathology?
Oral pathology provides critical insights into oral health conditions and provides a variety of benefits, including:
- Early detection of oral cancer
- Accurate diagnosis of abnormalities
- Guided treatment planning
- Improved patient outcomes
- Minimally invasive biopsy procedures
- Peace of mind through screening
- Monitoring of chronic conditions
- Detection of hidden infections or cysts
Mobile Oral and Facial Surgery Reviews
I went in for a dental implant procedure. I was a bit apprehensive due to how many years had gone by since the tooth was extracted. Upon arrival all staff encountered were quite pleasant and reassuring about what I was about to experience. Needless to say everything went very well. When I was awakened after the procedure, I was still waiting for it to begin. Day 2 after the procedure and all I’ve taken is the prescribed antibiotics and OTC Tylenol. Dr. Mullinex even called later that evening to do a wellness check. I go back in several days for a follow up.
Dr. Mullenix and his entire staff are GREAT! I recommend him 100%. He makes the entire visit comfortable and as painless as possible!!!!
The whole staff was very professional and knowledgeable and friendly.
