Overview
While Oral Surgeon Christopher Mullenix, DMD, MD makes every effort to save and maintain your natural teeth, there are instances where a tooth or teeth might have to be taken out. A simple extraction takes out a tooth that's visible over the gums. This is normally used for a tooth that's damaged or decayed and cannot be repaired. A surgical extraction removes a tooth that has not erupted over the gums. Surgical extractions are frequently performed to remove impacted teeth, like the wisdom teeth, that don't have sufficient space to fit into your mouth. Regardless of the reason for needing an extraction in Mobile Oral and Facial Surgery, our staff will treat you with the best care. Our Mobile, AL office offers different sedation methods like nitrous oxide and oral-conscious sedation, and that means you can remain comfortable and calm during your procedure. Get in touch with our team to find out more or to schedule an examination with Dr. Mullenix to boost your oral health.
How Are Tooth Extractions Performed?
Tooth extractions are typically performed in our dental office under local anesthesia. In some cases, if the tooth is impacted or if the procedure is more complex, sedation or general anesthesia may be used. One of our oral surgeons will begin by loosening the tooth with specialized instruments to ease it from the surrounding bone and ligaments. If the tooth is difficult to remove in one piece, it may be broken into smaller fragments to minimize damage to the surrounding tissues. After the extraction, the area is cleaned, and if necessary, sutures are placed to promote healing. Post-operative instructions are given to manage any discomfort and to ensure proper healing of the gum and bone.
What Are the Benefits of Tooth Extractions?
Though many patients might wish to delay or bypass tooth extractions, getting these procedures performed as soon as possible after detection can offer a number of dental health advantages, including:
- Averts damage and decay of healthy nearby teeth
- Can work to avoid the spread of infection
- Prep for dental implants to replace the look and abilities of the lost tooth
- Carried out utilizing a topical anesthetic to dull the tooth and gums to keep you as comfortable as possible
- Relatively simple process that happens in our office
Tooth Extractions Reviews
I had my wisdom teeth taken out and went in really nervous, but honestly, there was nothing to be worried about. The whole experience was smooth, and I highly recommend Dr. Mullenix. What stood out to me the most is how much he truly cares about his patients. A lot of doctors just focus on getting the job done and moving on, but Dr. Mullenix took the time to talk everything through with me and made sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. He even personally called a few hours after I got home to check on me, which meant so much. That level of care is rare these days!
4 of my kids have used Mullenix. For this last one, we almost used someone else simply because the orthodontist referral for wisdom teeth was sent to this “other” group on Grelot. And THAT practice was horrible from the start. Customer service, attention to detail, and a well oiled machine is what you get with Mullenix et al. In and out, no worries or problems. And he STILL calls the same night to personally check on the patient. Don’t even go anywhere else.
Dr. Mullenix and staff are the absolute best. I strongly recommend his services. While sedated I had two extractions the same day. The surgery was a quick 20 minute process as he stated it would be. He even called and checked on me to see how I was doing later that evening. You don't find that often, well let's just say I've personally never experienced any dentist in his profession to check on my progress. He's patient and listens to your concerns. Again 10/10, I sincerely recommend. Ohhhh, I love their chapstick too. 😍 lol
Had extractions performed by Dr Mullenix. Very little if any pain. Very professional staff. Would highly recommend and would use again!
Very courteous and professional. My wait was short and the process was smooth. I wanted to see my extracted wisdom tooth, though, but forgot to ask because of just coming off of anesthesia.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you have a tooth extraction while pregnant?
Yes, if it’s necessary. The safest period for dental treatment is the second trimester, and local anesthesia can be used safely under your doctor’s guidance. Non-urgent extractions are often postponed until after birth, but infections or abscesses should not be ignored.
Can I drive myself to and from an appointment for tooth extraction
If only local anesthesia is used, you can usually drive yourself. For extractions requiring sedation or IV medication, a trusted driver is mandatory. Even mild sedatives can slow reaction time and make driving unsafe.
How can I avoid dry socket after tooth extraction?
The best prevention is to keep the clot in place. Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or vigorous rinsing for several days. Stick to soft foods and follow our post-care instructions carefully. We’ll show you exactly how to care for the area to promote clean, comfortable healing.
