What Is Wisdom Tooth Removal?
Wisdom tooth removal is a common oral surgery procedure performed to extract one or more of the third molars — also known as wisdom teeth — that often cause problems such as pain, crowding, or infection when they emerge improperly. At Mobile Oral and Facial Surgery, board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons Dr. Christopher Mullenix and Dr. Aaron Wallender offer safe, efficient wisdom tooth extractions using advanced techniques and sedation options to ensure a comfortable experience. Whether your wisdom teeth are impacted or simply causing discomfort, we can provide personalized care from consultation through recovery to protect your oral health and prevent future complications. How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth are typically removed through a minor surgical procedure performed by one of our oral surgeons, often under some form of sedation for comfort. The process begins with a consultation and imaging, followed by the procedure itself, which usually takes about 45 – 60 minutes, depending on the number and position of the teeth. During the surgery, a small incision may be made in the gum to access impacted teeth, and the teeth might be sectioned for easier removal. After removal, stitches may be placed, and patients are given detailed aftercare instructions to support healing and manage discomfort.
Wisdom Tooth Extractions Reviews
I had my wisdom teeth taken out and went in really nervous, but honestly, there was nothing to be worried about. The whole experience was smooth, and I highly recommend Dr. Mullenix. What stood out to me the most is how much he truly cares about his patients. A lot of doctors just focus on getting the job done and moving on, but Dr. Mullenix took the time to talk everything through with me and made sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. He even personally called a few hours after I got home to check on me, which meant so much. That level of care is rare these days!
4 of my kids have used Mullenix. For this last one, we almost used someone else simply because the orthodontist referral for wisdom teeth was sent to this “other” group on Grelot. And THAT practice was horrible from the start. Customer service, attention to detail, and a well oiled machine is what you get with Mullenix et al. In and out, no worries or problems. And he STILL calls the same night to personally check on the patient. Don’t even go anywhere else.
Dr. Mullenix and staff are the absolute best. I strongly recommend his services. While sedated I had two extractions the same day. The surgery was a quick 20 minute process as he stated it would be. He even called and checked on me to see how I was doing later that evening. You don't find that often, well let's just say I've personally never experienced any dentist in his profession to check on my progress. He's patient and listens to your concerns. Again 10/10, I sincerely recommend. Ohhhh, I love their chapstick too. 😍 lol
Had extractions performed by Dr Mullenix. Very little if any pain. Very professional staff. Would highly recommend and would use again!
Very courteous and professional. My wait was short and the process was smooth. I wanted to see my extracted wisdom tooth, though, but forgot to ask because of just coming off of anesthesia.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have all four wisdom teeth removed at the same time?
Yes, most patients with all their wisdom teeth choose to have all four removed in one visit to avoid multiple recoveries. This approach is often more efficient and can simplify healing. Our team will assess your oral health and imaging to determine whether removing all four at once is appropriate for you.
Is there a minimum age requirement for wisdom teeth removal?
There is no strict age requirement, but many teens benefit from removal between ages 15 and 19, when the roots are not fully developed. Earlier removal can reduce the risk of complications such as impaction or crowding. Our team will recommend timing based on your teen’s dental development and comfort.
How do I help my teen who is nervous about wisdom tooth removal?
Reassurance, clear expectations, and understanding the sedation options available can go a long way in easing anxiety. Encourage your teen to ask questions so they feel informed and prepared. Our team will walk both of you through every step, helping the experience feel more manageable.
